Steph Batalis is a Research Fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), where she leads research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and national security. Her work examines how AI-enabled advances in the life sciences are reshaping both biomedical innovation and biosecurity in the U.S. and globally. Trained as a biochemist, Steph brings deep technical expertise to policy discussions on opportunities and safeguards for emerging biotechnologies, with an emphasis on U.S. competitiveness and security. Her work has been covered in Foreign Policy, Axios, Nature, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and Defense One. Steph holds a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology with a focus in structural and computational biophysics from Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine, as well as a BA in molecular and cellular biology from Vanderbilt University.
